Back and Neck Pain Care

Back and Neck Pain Care Focused on Movement, Function and Confidence

Back and neck pain may arise from muscles, joints, discs, nerves or age-related changes in the spine. Symptoms can remain localised or travel into an arm or leg, sometimes with tingling, numbness or weakness. A careful assessment helps identify features that need investigation and guides appropriate care.

Most treatment plans are based on the pattern and duration of symptoms, neurological findings, general health, daily activities and the effect of pain on function. Imaging is not automatically required for every episode and is selected when clinical findings indicate that it may change management.

Conditions We Assess

Assessment includes common mechanical back or neck pain, disc-related symptoms, sciatica, persistent pain, stiffness and symptoms following injury. The consultation also checks for warning signs, progressive neurological changes or other features that may require urgent investigation or referral.

Evaluation and Diagnosis

The examination may assess posture, spinal movement, strength, sensation, reflexes and the way symptoms respond to different positions. X-rays or more detailed imaging may be recommended for selected patients, particularly when symptoms persist, follow significant trauma or suggest nerve involvement.

Individual Treatment

Care may include explanation and reassurance, activity guidance, appropriate medication, physiotherapy and a graded exercise programme. Treatment aims to improve movement and function while helping patients understand how to manage symptoms and return progressively to work, exercise and daily activity.

When Further Care Is Required

Persistent nerve symptoms, significant weakness or pain that does not improve may require further assessment and specialist treatment planning. New bladder or bowel disturbance, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness or severe symptoms after major trauma require urgent medical attention.
