
Fractures, dislocations and orthopaedic trauma can result from falls, road traffic accidents, sports or direct impact. Injury severity varies from stable fractures that may be managed with support and protection to displaced or complex injuries that require urgent reduction or surgical stabilisation.
Prompt assessment helps identify the injury pattern, check circulation and nerve function, and recognise wounds or other concerns that may need emergency care. Treatment is then planned around the injured bone or joint, stability, alignment, patient health and functional requirements.
Evaluation includes understanding how the injury occurred and examining pain, swelling, deformity, movement and the condition of the surrounding skin, nerves and circulation. X-rays are commonly used to identify fractures or dislocations, with additional imaging considered for selected complex injuries or joint involvement.
Stable injuries may be treated with a sling, splint, cast, brace or boot and appropriate limits on movement or weight-bearing. Displaced, unstable, open or joint-involving injuries may require reduction or surgery using suitable fixation methods. Treatment is individualised to restore alignment and stability.
Severe deformity, an open wound, heavy bleeding, loss of sensation, a cold or pale limb, or major trauma requires urgent emergency assessment. Patients should not attempt to straighten a deformed limb or joint themselves. Early specialist care is particularly important when an injury threatens skin, nerves or circulation.
Follow-up appointments and imaging may be needed to monitor alignment and bone healing. Rehabilitation is introduced at the appropriate stage to reduce stiffness, rebuild strength and restore walking or limb function. Activity and weight-bearing are progressed according to injury stability and healing.
